The pistons are hitting exhaust valves, does this mean my timming is wrong

my problem is that the pistons are hittin exhaust valves. Does this mean my timing is wrong. There is a gear attached to campshaft, on that gear there is a white marking. Doe the mark has to face east or west. Please help
