Engine will not turn over. It will not crank, it will not make a sound.

6 cylinder manual trans.

So I was replacing my starter, after I got it installed the new new one was not engaging the flywheel. You could just hear the starter motor spinning. So I took it off to remove a shim. After I put it back on, the engine will not do anything. There is no click to indicate a dead battery or anything. I've since charged the battery over night. I get power to the interior electronics; radio, ac, lights. I've now got the stater wired up but not bolted on, and it won't spin. I'm thinking now that it's something to do with my clutch switch. Maybe it's not indicating that it's pressed in. Should I try bleeding the slave cylinder?

I would verify that your battery is good by having it load tested. Then I would clean and tighten the battery cables. Then I would check to see if there was battery power at the big post on the starter. Then I would check the small post when you are trying to start the engine to see if there is battery voltage there. If there is not the you are looking at a clutch switch or ignition switch or some other wiring problem.

My mechanic cousin came over and helped me with it. After checking both clutch pedal switches and all the wiring from the starter to the main fuse box we found out that it was a bad starter relay. The relay was still clicking when the key was turned, so we didn't think that was the problem. In fact, the click was the only noise coming from the car when turning the key. We ended up swaping the headlight and starter relays, and everything worked. Well. Except the headlights. :)
