I'm looking to buy a 92 Ford Thunderbird, I was told the reverse does not work. What could be the problem?

Drive it in manual low, meaning "1", not drive. If it upshifts to second gear at a normal speed, say 15 - 20 mph, suspect a broken low / reverse band.

What happened when you drove it?
If it stays in first gear, the band is not broken and the actuator piston is working. Line pressure goes way up in reverse. I suppose the front pump could be weak but you'll have to connect a gauge to test the pressures.
