The car seems to have a problem in the lower gears. It idles rough but then normalizes as time passes. I here a popping sound if i hit the gas hard on the front left side. Cold it be as simple as a bad spark plug?

We need to know which engine you have when discussing an engine running problem. If you have the 3.3L, start with new spark plug wires, especially if they are still the original ones. The common symptom was backfiring under load, as in accelerating.
