1991 Pontiac Trans Am in tank fuel pump

I have an bad in-tank fuel pump and I want to know if I was to disconnect the fuel pump in the tank and install an in line fuel pump will it still work or will something bad happen
is it best to just replace the in tank or can i take the easy way out and install the fuel pump

it's best to get the proper one in tank as the inline ones may not have enough or to much pressure then you'll need another regulator if it's to much if not enough you'll need a different fuel pump
