I can hear the knocking of what sounds like a bad lifter, and now the car seems to be loosing power going up hills and at high speeds.

Will I need a new engine or can it be repaired?

have a local pro listen to it it could be a piston or anything . Most of the time if an engine is bad it can be rebuilt unless block is cracked someplace and from your description it's not that.
