1991 Ford F250 transmission leaking

1991 Ford F250 V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

ok, so i have a 1991 ford f-250 with a 2 piece drive shaft. recently we took out the drive shaft to replace the carrier bearing and when we were going to put the shaft back in we noticed a huge puddle of tranny fluid coming out of the tail of the tranny. now my truck is parked in my garage and has been sitting their without a drive shaft for about a week and a half. what caused the leak??
