Now it stalls comingto a stop. We have to treat it as though it's a manual transmission, and coast it on hills and slamit into gear. I've done some research and come up with the torque converter, but when I called an autobody shop they said we needed a diagnostic first.

Do you have a check engine light on?
If so its best to have it diagnose and check for codes
If it’s stalling in drive and you have to keep foot on gas to keep it running suspect and check for vacuum leaks
And or IAC valve
If stalling when going to stop but If in N keep it running suspect tranny and or its solenoids
I would check and clean IAC valve 1st
