When the car is put in reverse and the clutch is let out, there is a loud knocking noise that occurs until the car stops. (like a clock ticking but more like a knocking sound).

Do you have any idea what it might be?

I know it's been awhile since you asked this question but the problem is probably a reverse synchronizer in the transmission. The synchro is cheap but the labor is not. It involves dropping the transmission and taking it apart. If there is anything else that needs done to the transmission while it is out of the car I recommend paying for it then. Hope that helps.
