Compression spring and ball importance

Is the compression spring and ball Of the shifting fork important in my transfer case.
I forgot to install it after putting my transfer case back together and want to know if it will be bad to leave out.

Yes it helps hold everything in position put them back in.

If you don't have it, the shift is going to self disengage as there is nothing to hold the fork in position.
