what will cause the engine to start only with starter fluid?

drove to parts store came out and engine will crank but not start. i can give it a shot of starter fluid and it fires right up and run great till I shut it off. Next I installed new cap, rotor and plugs amd still the same thing. what next? PLEASE HELP SAVE "THE BEAST"
