First of all it is not the EGR valve (so there is no reason to change that).
Black smoke means that the engine isn't burning all of the gas that enters the cylinder (either because of ignition system problems, compression problems or too much fuel[or not enough air] is entering the cylinder).
This car has a Mass Air Flow Sensor (they were frequently the cause of symptoms like yours). The sensor is located in the intake air snorkle between the air filter and the throttle body. It is flat and attaches to the side of the air snorkle and has a three wire connector running to it.
With the engine idling, at normal operating temperature, tap on the sensor with something like the handle of a screwdriver. If the engine dies, the sensor is bad.
