engine won't stay running without backfiring

vw golf 2 gti 8v While driving, my car could not accelerate and when revving it backfires. No power on cold start valve. It start and goes off on its own. What to do?

If the check engine light is on, have the computer scanned for trouble codes. Check timing belt, check for major vacuum leaks, check fuel pump pressure, check the catalytic converter for plugging. This could be the result of several different things.
