1990 Mazda Miata Starting

Went I start my car the engine cranks over very slow and somtimes it does not start smoke even started coming out if the hood once then I tried replacing the battery with a new one seemed to be better but after a short drive and went to start car again the problem started again tested the voltage and it seems like the battery is ok and the alternator is ok Aswell and ideas?

Have the starter tested. It sounds like it is drawing too many amps. That can cause a fire if it is the problem. Most parts stores will test it for free.

Let me know what you find. Also, if you notice smoke again, open the hood and see where it is coming from. See if it is coming from the starter or one of the battery cables.

Ok I will I did pop the hood as soon a I noticed last time and the smoke was coming out of the direction of the starter
