what would make my overflow tank leak out the cap on my 1990 honda crx

Make sure the cap is good. If it is, pay attention to engine temp to make sure it isn't overheating. If it isn't, try this. With the engine COLD, remove the radiator cap and start the engine. If coolant shoots out, chances are you have a bad head gasket and it is building pressure in the cooling system.
