When I put my car in reverse it comes to a sudden stop while I'm still in reverse as if I'm stepping on the breaks, but my foot is still on the gas. In order for me to continue to reverse out of place I have to put it in park, drive, then reverse again.

sounds like it's going into park since park is right next to reverse. what's making it do that is the question? maybe shift cale needs adjust or it's loose?
