if yes how do you remove these hubs so axel can be pulled out

To replace axles, remove the 3 bolts on the lower ball joint. That will allow enough swing to release the axle nose.

Vanagon axles come straight out. Just remove the 6 bolts per CV joint and the axle will fall / slide out.
No ball joints.

Unless you are talking about Syncro Front Suspension. More involved then.
