I have an 89 Pontiac Firebird Formula/5.0L My engine light has been on for a couple months and it struggles to start when engine is cold. Once car is started I experience major break up through acceleration and occasional backfire or more like a popping sound. The ENTIRE fuel system from injectors to filler neck was replaced a year ago so I think its ignition related. Any ideas? Also once the car is at operating temp. The symptoms settle down a bit.

When the Check Engine light turns on there will be a diagnostic fault code directing you to the circuit or system with the problem, not necessarily the defective part. Many auto parts stores will read those codes for you for free to get you started.
