How do I replace the window guides and have the windows work properly?

Hello,

I have a 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calias International, 4 cyc, Quad 2.3 dohc. I had to re-install the window guides on the driver side window. After installation on three seperate occassions the window went up and down as it should have a couple of times and then it fell out of the track again. I took the pasenger side door apart to compare and see the mechanics of it's workings and now I'm having the same trouble with that window. What am I missing? Can you please provide me 1. With the correct part number of the guides for this car and 2. With the fix. Lol.

Here is a general description of how I installed the new guides. 1. I took door panel off. 2. I rolled the window all the way down having to stop along way to bring the front end up so it would roll down. 3. Once down the plastic piece that is connected to the motor that lifts the window itself I pulled it out of the slot which freed the window completely. 4. Then I took the shorter of the two guides and snapped it to the rear part of the window. 5. Then I connected the plastic piece thats connected to the motor back in it's slot. 6. Then I inserted the rear guide into the rear track. 8. Then I raised the window a little which brought the front end down so I could clip the front guide together. 9. I aligned the window int he front track and raised the window until the guide was up against the track and then kept raising the window until the plastic guide worked it's way into the track. And that is how I did it? I don't have air in my car and I live in Vegas and it's over 90 degrees and it really sucks not being able to roll my windows down. I await hearing from you. Thank you.

I found this bulletin, it is about all the electronic service info I could locate so far, but it does include the part numbers.

9218oldsmobile07

NUMBER: 91-T-175

CORP. REF. NO: 131033

DATE: August 1991

SECTION: 10

SUBJECT:
PLIABILITY OF FRONT AND REAR DOOR GLASS GUIDE PIN CLIPS - PRE-SOAK GUIDE PINS

MODELS/YEARS:
1989-91 CUTLASS CALAIS

CONDITION:
Service technicians are having problems securing guide pin clips to front and rear door windows, resulting in damage to the clips in many cases.

CAUSE:
The clips are shipped in bulk quantities to the plant and to GMSPO wet-packed. However, GMSPO has the clips re-packaged, and they are not wet-packed when stored at GMSPO or when shipped to the dealers.

CORRECTION:
Service technicians must pre-soak the door glass guide pins for eight hours in a container of water prior to installation.

Or

Suggest that dealers re-package the clip into a Zip-Loc(R) bag or equivalent, partly filled with water as soon as they are received in the parts department.

Pre-soaking of the guide pin allows the guides to become more pliable thus enhancing the capability of fully securing the guide to the window. When the guide is being installed, an audible "snapping" sound should be heard, which indicates that the guide is fully seated.

PARTS INFORMATION:

P/N 20712176 (Front Guide) P/N 22539533 (Rear Guide)

Parts are currently available from GMSPO.

I have same problem only manual windows. The drivers side will only open a few inches and I need to be able to hand signals. It is about to get sub zero so I really cant oen them enuf to do that and I dont want to get rear ended! I think I found a temp fix. I have 2o90 olds cutlass calais coupe, all manual stuff. I figured out by research that it was the turn signal assembly and you have to take off the steering wheel to replace. He rented the tool and got wheel off to a point, then he came to a part that wouldnt come off without breaking it so he had to stop.
I want to try to fix the window movement myself and I know kmow nothing. Jack, please help with any advise or info. The car only has 55k milez but may have an interior engine problem, water pump is failing and it is tied yo yhe timing chain, needs shocked by and struts so it basically is not worth any money. I am on ss retirement so no mechanic money. What to do? Thank you in advance.

Good morning Tazzi

Those regulators were the issue with the clips not holding the window in the track. The clips kept the window on the track but the regulator was responsible for keeping the window straight. The bushings and the tracks wear out.

Replacing the regulator is the answer. You can go to a parts store and get the regulator. You already have the clips. There is a company called Dorman that still makes the regulator and most parts stores have access to all Dorman products.
