'89 Mercury Grand Marquis

I recently bought an '89 Mercury Grand Marquis and when I go to start the engine, it will idle and then die right away unless I put it in drive and start driving. What might be the cause?

Clean the throttle-body and idle air system. Any applicable trouble codes? How long since a tune-up?
