car wont start

I have a Mercedes benz 1989 230e model - i have taken out the gearbox and put it back but the car wont start what might be the problem it seems that the car might still be in gear how can i fix the problem?

does the gearbox have 2 links and how does it look like as I suspect this might be the problem why the car does not start as it does not select the gears properly.

i hopw this is an automatic. this is off a 260 230 has to be similar
