1989 626 automatic, lost all gears, no pressure, replaced torque converter (stripped), installed trans and removed pump and check, reinstall, now when take off from stop it shifts into second, goes a ways and downshifts into first and then back into 2nd and stays there, wont shift up from there, doesnt even attempt to. Any ideas?

Did any metal shavings get into the valve body? Was the TCM checked?

Actually I dont know, its a friend. He tells me the trans worked fine prior to the converter stripping out. He had the trans in and out 3 times because the converter seal kept leaking. He finally stopped the leak but now has this issue. He did not tear the trans down-he just removed the pump and re-installed it. Is this trans completely computer controlled? If so do I have to have special equipment to run a self test on an 89 model? Thanks for your input!

The trans isn't completely computer controled. I have to be honest. I think metal shavings have gotten into places they shouldn't be. If it stripped, metal has gotten into the trans.
