THIS IS MY MISSION AND APPROACH WITH PROBLEMS LIKE THIS:
1) FIND OUT ALL HISTORY YOU HAVE---MODS, ETC. EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED---WHAT YOU OBSERVE NOW
2) THE PROBLEM WAS A "PROBLEM", AND MAY STILL BE. BUT WITH ALL YOU HAVE DONE, MAYBE YOU FIXED IT. BUT CREATED ANOTHER PROBLEM.I GOTTA KNOW EVERY LITTLE THING YOU DID!
3) I REALLY TRY NOT TO CONFUSE YOU, AND I DON'T WANT YOU TO JUMP AHEAD, AND COMPOUND THE PROBLEM. LIKE SEEING A PIC WHERE I LABELLED THE SPARK PLUG WIRES ON THE DISTRIBUTOR. YOUR DISTRIBUTOR MAY BE SET UP COGS AWAY FROM "TEXTBOOK"---BUT STILL FUNCTION FINE WITH THE WIRES ALL 2 POSTS CW FROM THE PIC. CHANGING IT WOULD COMPOUND THE PROBLEM!
4) WE NEED THE FOLLOWINGFOR "COMBUSTION" I WILL GET YOU THEREONE STEP AT A TIME!
A) FUEL AND CORRECT AIR/ FUEL MIX. DELIVERED AND MIXED RIGHT (NO VACUUM LEAKS)
B) SPARK AND AT THE RIGHT TIMEON NEWER MODELS---THIS "12 VOLT BEGINNING" MIGHT GO THRU MANY SWITCHES, ELECTRONICS, AND MECHANICALS BEFORE IT EVEN GETS TO THE COIL AND ON TO THE SPARK PLUGS. WE'LL TEST THIS STUFF!
C) COMPRESSION---THIS IS USUALLY A MECHANICAL THING. GOOD/ WORN ENGINE PARTS/ OR EVEN VALVE TIMING ISSUES MIGHT MAKE COMPRESSION HAPPEN AT THE WRONG TIME
IT IS IMPORTANT YOU TELL ME TEST RESULTS.I DON'T MIND MEGA DETAIL. YOU WILL GET SICK OF MINE!
OK---HERE'S WHAT I KNOW----SO FAR
starter. YOU HAVE THE LITTLE WIRE INSTALLED ON THE LITTLE TERMINAL? THE POSITIVE
BATTERY CABLE IS ON THE BIG LUG FURTHEST FROM THE STARTER BODY?
Battery, POS AND NEG ARE NOT CROSSED
iignition coil, ARE YOU SURE THEY GAVE YOU THE CORRECT COIL---DOUBLE CHECK!
Ignition switch, - ARE YOU SURE IT IS THE ONE FOR TILT---IN THIS LINK "FORWARD" IS THE LEFT END
(SORTA ROUND) --THE REAR IS SQUARED. IF YOU HAVE THE WRONG
ONE, IT WILL MOUNT OPPOSITE
I WILL HAVE TO GET AND LOOK OVER THE STARTING CIRCUIT WIRING DIAGRAM
fuel pump relay, I THOUGHT THIS WAS A MECHANICAL FUEL PUMP?
All fueses, CORRECT SIZES IN EACH SLOT?
Carborator, WHAT KIND OF CARBURETOR DID YOU INSTALL, CAN YOU SEND ME A LINK OF IT,
FROM WHERE YOU GOT IT?
Mechanical fuel pump, IS IT MECHANICAL OR ELECTRIC.I PREFER MECHANICAL, WORKS
GREAT, FEW THINGS GO WRONG, IT'S REALLY CHEAP!
All light bulbs exteriorFINE
and battery cables ----POSITIVE TO BIG STARTER LUG----NEGATIVE DIRECTLY TO ENGINE BLOCK
ARE YOU 100% SURE THE BATTERY IS FULLY CHARGED?
DID YOU PULL THE DISTRIBUTOR OUT OF THE ENGINE?
I BEEN IN 6 CJ 5s AND 1 WILLYS SINCE I WAS ALLOWED ON THE ASPHALT IN 1981!
PRESENTLY STILL HAVE THE LAST '77 CJ 5 AND THE '46 WILLY'S, GOT BOTH OF 'EM IN 1991
IT'S OK TO HAVE "EXACT PARTS"BUT THEY AIN'T GOTTA BE THE EXPENSIVE, OEM, FROM THE STEALERSHIP KIND. USUALLY THEY GIVE A ONE YEAR OR WAY LESS WARRANTY
I'VE BEEN DIYing FOREVER---FROM MY 1ST TOYS TILL NOW----THERE IS USUALLY NOTHING WRONG USING AFTER-MARKET PARTS. WARRANTY'S RANGE FROM "NONE" TO "LIFETIME".I HAVE FOUND IT EZier TIME AND TIME AGAIN THAT EXCHANGING A PART AT A PARTS STORE, NORMALLY WILL HAPPEN, AND WITH NO HASSLE.I CAN HONESTLY SAY, THAT HAS NOT BEEN THE CASE AT A STEALERSHIP
I KNOW THE CJs VERY WELL----I DO ALL OF MY OWN JEEP WORK, 'CEPT FOR ENGINE MACHINING, AND WHEEL ALIGNMENTS. JUST SO YOU KNOW, I'M A PLUMBER, ALWAYS WILL BE AN AIRBORNE RANGER, I WORK PART TIME AT AN AUTO PARTS STORE
PEOPLE WITH JEEPS AROUND HERE, SOMETIMES SEEK ME OUT, IT'S A COMMON THING TO BE IN PUBLIC WITH MY WIFE AND BE APPROACHED WITH THE OPENING LINE, "YOU'RE THE JEEP GUY, AREN'T YOU?". NORMALLY THIS RESULTS IN REPAIRING ONE VERBALLY (FOR A WHILE) AT WAL-MART, AND THE WIFE GETS PISSED
SO IT DIED ON IT'S OWN AT A LIGHT
THIS IS STUFF I WANT YOU TO DO NOW---AND TELL ME YOU DID IT!
!) PUT 2 SPOONFULS OF GAS DOWN THE CARB---IMMEDIATELY TRY TO CRANK ITWHAT DOES IT DO. EXACTLY. DO IT AGAIN!
2) DISREGARD MY READING---WHAT DO YOU GET AT THE POSITIVE SIDE OF THE COIL WITH THE KEY ON---SEE 1ST PIC
3) HAVE YOU PULLED THE DISTRIBUTOR OUT?
ARE YOU CHECKED FOR EMISSIONS IN YOUR AREA?
MORE THAN 1/2 OF THE CRAP ON YOU ENGINE, PROBABLY DOES NOT WORK, AND IS USELESS, IT TAKES ONLY A FEW VACUUM LINES TO MAKE IT RUN FINE----YOUR STOCK CARB COULD BE REPLACED WITH A CARTER BBD USED ON A 1979 CJ, AND FOR 1/2 THE COST----THEY ARE ALMOST THE SAME EXCEPT FOR THE STEPPER MOTOR ON THE REAR
MY "NEW FOUND FRIEND" RICK'S CJ 7 IS AN '86---( HE FOUND ME AT A STOP LIGHT!) MUCH OF THE CRAP WAS CARRIED ONTO THE WRANGLERS WITH A 258----WE'VE REMOVED THE CRAP (VACUUM AND WIRING)---INSTALLED A '79 REMAN CARB. PURRS LIKE A KITTENSEE MY PICS
WE CAN EVEN GET RID OF MORE---IT MIGHT THEN LOOK EMPTY AND SIMILAR TO UNDER MY HOOD. LAST PIC
STEPHEN W/ A 1987 YJ WILL BE HERE TOMORROW OR TUESDAY, I'LL GET SOME SHOTS OF HIS TOO, BEFORE WE ADD A LEAF TO MY REAR SPRINGS
