1989 Ford 300 6cl gear on the ignition distributor pin sheared?

A ford 300 6 cy the distributor gears sheared the pin on the gear on the distributor what would cause that the head gasket I just fixed now it sheared the pin on the distributor?

It could be just normal wear and tear of something in the distributor could be binding up.

This happens when the oil pump needs to be replaced because debris from the head gasket job has gotten down into the oil pan and is not inside the oil pump. Here is how to change iot out and clean out the oil pan. You might be able to take the oil pump apart and clean it.

1. After removing oil pan as outlined previously, unfasten and remove oil pump.
2. Prime pump with engine oil.
3. Coat a new pump gasket with oil resistant sealer and place it on pump.
4. Install pump and oil pan. Tighten oil pump retaining bolts to specifications.
