How do you know the pump failed? Chrysler pumps almost never stop running while you're driving. (That's how GM pumps commonly fail). Chrysler pumps fail to start up leaving you sitting in the parking lot or driveway, not on the side of the road. My daily driver is an '88 Grand Caravan that is on its first replacement pump, and it was a used one.

Which engine do you have? Have you checked for diagnostic fault codes? Did you check for spark when it wouldn't start?

To remove the gas tank there's three screws behind the filler door to disconnect the fill tube, then after the two straps are removed the tank and tube come down together. At that point the tube can be slid out of the rubber doughnut but you don't have to do that to replace the pump assembly.
