What would cause the car to stop running suddenly. Sometimes while sitting still and idling and sometimes while driving on the freeway?

You could have a problem with ignition switch losing voltage or signal. I've seen this on several occasions over the years. Does it always start back up on next try?

Need to know the engine size when discussing an engine problem. If you have the 2.2L or 2.5L engine, suspect the Hall Effect pickup assembly under the rotor in the distributor. It's a high-failure item and will often work again once it cools down for about an hour.
