I have a 89 silverado and was curious if there is a way to tighten the steering from not having so much play in it?

DO NOT attempt to do that. There is a backlash adjustment but it is there for initial setup during assembly. Once the box has wear, all the wear is in the straight ahead position and if you were to adjust that out, it would cause the box to bind up during turns. The only cure for a worn box is a new box. Just make sure it is the box and not a bad pitman arm or coupler.
