right turn signal only works if switch is held up, and then smokes a bit

So the left turn signal works ?Sounds like a bad switch.

but being a bad switch would cause it to smoke? maybe because wire is partially broke off of switch?

I have bad switches smoke from only making a partial connection or that connection burning up and smoking Because the connection is wore out.
