i have a 89 cavalier z24 with the 2.8 liter, the transmission went with 193,000 miles. got a transmission with 71,000 miles from a local scrapyard out of a 89 buick skyhawk with the 2.0 liter. i put the buick transmission in and it worked but the car wont shift into 2nd until it gets to 4000rpm. same with 3rd but i have to be going about 55mph for it to shift into 3rd.. then once i drop past 50mph it downshifts into 2nd and the rpm's shoot way back up. i can only drive around town in 2nd gear.

My first guess is the new transmission (being from a different type of car) doesn't recognize the computer that is in your vehicle.
