I have an 89 Buick Century that has been kept in fair condition. 2 days ago when I pushed the gas pedal there was a knocking sound. Yesterday there was a knocking followed by a decrease in acceleration power and then it shut off. Now when I turn it on it shuts off. What could the problem be?

Start by checking oil level in crankcase. Is it full?

Ok not to sound naive and basically like a chick cause I am one... What is a crankcase and where do I find it? If it isn't does that mean add oil and it'll be ok?
