What engine? Engine code (3 letters on timing belt cover sticker).
Could be Engine Speed Sensor (Crankshaft position sensor) or Camshaft Position Sensor problem.
Have you scanned for stored trouble codes?

Check the distributor for correct output signal at center wire of 3 wire connector... see attached image.
Signal should pulse as distributor rotor turns... if distributor rotor does not turn, check timing belt.
