My 1988 Toyota 4cyl, fuel injected, 4 wheel drive, manual transmission pickup truck won't start when I turn the key but the relay clicks. If I turn the key a few more times it starts. I have checked the battery, the starter and have cleaned the battery terminals and the ground connections but no joy

How did you check the starter? It sounds like you have worn solenoid contacts if it makes a single kind of loud clunk each time you turn the ignition switch. This is real common with the little silver Nippendenso starters. The contacts can be replaced for around 20 bucks but most people just replace the entire starter.
