cylinder #4 not firing
engine overheating after 15mins of driving
losing coolant not sure where
no heat in heater,
sometimes i can see blue smoke coming from cylinder #4 area

mechanic has told me i need to replace the head gasket, but fears opening a can of expensive worms thereafter

Sounds like a blown head gasket, check fore signs of coolant in No 4 cyl, i do think that this will be your problem.
