car only runs slowly or it will cut out

My 88 Pontiac Fiero will cut off if the accellerator is pushed to the max. The car will run ok if driven slowly , But will backfire at intake and cut out if accellerated too fast .The car failed inspection for HC ppm 391. (No check engine lights.) o2 sensor

Check fuel pump pressure to make sure it is within spec. Also, check to make sure there are no vacuum leaks.

mine did something similar, replaced everything in the ignition system --ended up being the distributer... good luck
