On a 1988 Plymouth Voyager SE (V6 3.0L Engine)What causes the Tachometer (RPM gauge) needle to go around and not accurately show the engine RPMs at idle or under acceleration?

If this is the only instrument on the dash that's reading faulty, then it could be anything from the gauge itself, the wiring/connectors from the computer, to the crankshaft position sensor and/or it's wiring/connector.
