can you clean an egr valve? if so how?

Yes, they can be cleaned. Use carb and choke cleaner to soften carbon and remove as much as you can. Once it is clean, confirm that the valve is seating properly. NOTE: If the egr is that dirty, check the intake where it bolts on and clean it as well.
