I need to know how the temperature control cable is connected. There is a cable that is located on the passenger side that is hanging. I am not sure where to connect it. I believe that it controls the temperature for the air vent. I must have disconnected it while installing a new wire harness.

SO LIKE. WHAT AIN'T WORKING RIGHT?

SOMETIMES THERE ARE UNUSED WIRES THAT "DANGLE"---EXAMPLE ON MY JEEP CJ, THERE WERE OPTIONAL FLOOR LAMPS AT THE BOTTOM AND AT EITHER END OF THE DASH (SORTA LIKE A DOME LIGHT--CONTROLLED BY TWISTING THE LIGHT SWITCH K. NOB CW TILL IT CLICKED)

. ANYWAY, MINE DIDN'T COME WITH 'EM, SO I HAVE 2 YELLOW WIRES WITH A CONNECTOR SORTA DANGLING JUST UNDER AND ON EACH END OF MY DASH

"MR. JEEP" IS A '77 (MINE) WIRING IS IN GOOD ORDER----I'VE SEEN MANY ALL THRU THE YEARS THAT HAVE BEEN MONKEYED WITH SO MUCH, UNDER THE HOOD AND DASH LOOKS LIKE "HOARDERVILLE"---I'VE SEEN 'EM LOOKING SHOWROOM TOO!

IT'S REALLY HARD TO GUESS AT ONE WIRE AMONGST HUNDREDS. AND IT MAY BE AN ADD-ON!

IF YOU'LL TELL BE WHAT AIN'T WORKING.I 'MAYBE' CAN FIND A DIAGRAM OF THAT SYSTEM, WITH THE WIRE COLORS NOTED

It is the heater control cable on the right side just bellow the speaker. I believe that all the electrical is good. I just replaced it with a painless wiring kit. Not so painless. However;

The Heater control assembly doesn't seem to work. I would like to know what the metal cables actually do and where they go. There are 3 cables that are attached to the control assembly. I know that one goes to the center and one goes to the right side (not sure what they control). I am not sure where the 3rd one goes or what it does. The fan works (high, medium and low) but the temperature doesn't appear to work.

MISS JULIE I HAVE JUST DOWNLOADED ALL THE DIAGRAMS FROM "MITCHELL 1" CONCERNING THE 1988 WRANGLER

I'M MORE OF A CJ KINDA GUY (KNOW THEM VERY WELL)----I HAVE MESSED WITH A FEW WRANGLERS MOSTLY UNDER THE HOOD AND SOME OF THE DRIVE-TRAIN

I JUST LOOKED AT THE HEATER DIAGRAM ---- IT LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE A 1979-1986 CJ

SO I'M WITH YOU.I THINK

I HAVE NEW FRIEND WITH AN '88, WE'VE BEEN MESSING WITH HIS ENGINE, I HAVE NOTICED HIS CONTROLS ARE DIFFERENT, BUT I HAVEN'T LOOKED OVER THE HEATER AT ALL (SO WHAT I'M SAYING IS, I POSSIBLY CAN GET INFO FROM HIS)

ON A CJ, WE HAVE 4 K. NOBS THAT PULL CABLES AND A FAN SWITCH (SEE 1ST PIC)

MY FRIENDS '88, HAS "SLIDES" THAT OPERATE THE CABLES

IF THIS IS THE SAME HEATER BOX---I RECKON THE CABLES GO TO THE SAME PLACES--THEY JUST GET PULLED BY DIFFERENT CONTROLS. BUT STILL PERFORM THE SAME DUTIES

PIC 1)----IF "MY" AND OTHER "CJ OWNERS" CONTROLS HAVE BEEN WORKING "ALL OF THE FEATURES" (CORRECTLY)THE MOVEMENTS WON'T BE ALL "HARD" AND "STICKING", AS WITH THE CJ OWNER WHO DOES NOT UNDERSTAND THE OPERATION OF "K. NOB #2" (THE "AIR" K. NOB)

PIC 2). IT IS A BIT DECEIVINGTHIS CONTROL WILL COME OUT SO FAR (WITH EASE) AND STOP AT ABOUT 2-3/4 INCHES (PIC 3)THIS IS ACTUALLY 1/2 WAY---THE "HEAT SETTING" (AS DISPLAYED ON THE LABEL). THIS SETTING IS USED WITH THE "TEMP"--"DEFROST" AND "FAN". THIS KEEPS YOU WARM!

(SINCE THE K. NOB SORTA STOPS THERE, MANY THINK IT'S FULLY OUT TO THE "AIR POSITION"----SO THEY PUSH IT IN 1/2 WAY BACK TO WHAT THEY THINK IS "HEAT". THEY ARE ACTUALLY AT A 1/4 OF THE WAY OUT AND CHEATING THEMSELVES FROM MUCH NEEDED HEAT!)

THE "AIR KNOB" STOPS AT 1/2 OUT. IF YOU PULL IT HARD. IT WILL PULL ON OUT TO THE "VENT POSITION"NOW IT'S FULLY OUT. AT 3-5/8 INCHES (PIC 4)

AT THE SAME TIME, 2 VENTS OPEN ON A CJONE NEAR THE COWL VENT (BEHIND HOOD--BUT UNDER THE COWL). THIS ONE CHANNELS AIR BETWEEN THE DRIVER'S LEGS (DUCT). PIC 5

THE OTHER VENT THAT OPENS IS IN FRONT OF THE PASSENGER'S RIGHT LEG. MEGA OUTSIDE AIR FLOWS IN TO THE PASSENGER (AND INSIDE THE COCKPIT). PIC 6

THE "HARDNESS" OF PULLING THE OTHER 1/2 WAY OUT---IS WHAT IT TAKES TO OPEN THESE VENTS UP. IF IT'S NEVER BEEN DONE, IT MAY NEED A LITTLE HELP UNTIL IT LOOSENS UP, THAT IS PULLING THE K. NOB WHILE YOU "HELP IT" OPEN WITH YOUR FINGER (PIC 8)

ON A CJ, OUTSIDE AIR PUSHING IN THE COWL VENT (PIC 7) IS ALL THAT IS NEEDED FOR FLOW----NO NEED FOR ANY OTHER K. NOBS TO BE PULLED OUT OR THE FAN TO BE ON. THIS IS "POOR MAN'S AIR CONDITIONING!"

NOW THENIS MY PICTURE 6 WHAT THIS "MYSTERY CABLE". IS HANGING BESIDE OR NEAR?

YOUR TURN MISS JULIE

Yes, That is near it. The YJ is a bit different. However the same concept. I wish that I would have taken a pic for you.

You described it so well. It is almost like having the AC on (which this one does not have one).

"THE OTHER VENT THAT OPENS IS IN FRONT OF THE PASSENGER'S RIGHT LEG. MEGA OUTSIDE AIR FLOWS IN TO THE PASSENGER (AND INSIDE THE COCKPIT). PIC 6."

If I pull on the cable it just pulls out of the housing. I truly believe that the actual cable is broke. I am picking up a new cable this weekend and will reconnect it hopefully that will fix the issue.

MISS JULIE

WHERE ARE YOU GETTING YOUR PARTS FROM?

IS THERE AN ADVANCE AUTO PARTS NEARBY?

I KNOW SOME WAYS TO HELP TO SAVE YOUR FUNDAGE

STEPHEN WILL BE HERE IN THE MORNING W/ HIS '88

SEEMS HE HAS FOUND SOME HIGH SPEED "FORD ESCORT" HIGH BACK SEATS, WE ARE GONNA ATTEMPT TO RIG THEM INTO HIS, THE FRAMES JUST DON'T QUITE MATCH UP. HE GAVE $60 FOR THE PAIR

HE SENT THIS PIC (1ST PIC) EARLIER OF ONE OF 'EM SORTA JUST SITTING IN PLACE ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. THE PASSENGER SIDE SEAT IS WHAT'S BEEN IN IT SINCE HE BOUGHT THE JEEP

THE REST ARE MY TWO GUYS---'77 CJ 5 (MR. JEEP) AND '46 WILLYS ("WILLY")

SEND PICS OF YOURS AND OF YOUR PROBLEM

Nice pics. I like "Mr. Jeep" the best. The jeep is actually my husbands. However, it became a family project. I will take some pics and post.

I took care of my dad this weekend so didn't get a chance to work on the heat/cable issue.

By chance do you know about starter issues that they have on the 88 YJ. The Bendix doesn't go out far enough to fully engage with the fly wheel. It makes a pathetic sound. People said to shim the starter. My husband tried that and it didn't work.

I'D THINK SHIMMING WOULD GET THE TEETH FURTHER APART----MAYBE TRY ANOTHER BRAND STARTER

IF THIS IS AN AUTOMATIC---SEE IF YOUR FLYWHEEL/ FLEX PLATE IS CRACKED OR FLEXED REARWARD IN PLACES

YOU MIGHT SORTA TURN THE CRANK 360 DEGREES WITH A WRENCH OR RATCHET WHILE CHECKING DEPTH OF THE PLATE WITH THE STARTER REMOVED----INSPECT THE TEETH TOO. PIC 1

BAD TEETH ON MY '46s RING ("WILLY")--- WHEN I REPLACED HIS CLUTCH RECENTLY----PICS OF SOME OF THE PROCESS

I'LL SEE IF I CAN FIND MORE INFO ABOUT YOURS

STILL NO PICS OF YOURS. IS HE SHY?

We bought a starter from autozone (well 2) and took them both back. We now have one for Napa. Same issue. The teeth look fine it just seems that the bendix doesn't extend far enough out to make that good of a connection. The starter from Napa is better though. This is more frustrating than changing out the wiring harness. I have read a lot of post where others had the same issue. Some say to bore the holes so that you can adjust the starter closer to the flywheel. UGH! Don't think I want to do that.

I have been slammed with work and the kids when I get home. I will post pics soon. Hopefully this week end.

Love the pic of Willy with eyes.
