what other years are compatible for repairing a 4 speed floor shifter?

My shifter shaft broke in the housing. I have no other mechanical problems but I'm having a hard time finding a replacement part. No parts stories on my area carry a manual shifter for a 1988. Only automatic shifters. I have called salvage yards but I'm not sure if i could take a shifter from another year and it would still work........ please help

junkyards have crossovers to see what other vehicles are compatable to your needed parts. find one that does have this feature
