It came with a Bosch starter but the small silver Nippensenso starter can be installed too. I did that on MY '88 Caravan. That starter develops worn solenoid contacts very often. It's a common problem that causes an intermittent no-crank condition. It is also possible for the solenoid plunger to become wedged between those contacts so it won't release. That happened to me once too.
If you have the Nippendenso starter, remove the three screws on the solenoid cover. The plunger should come out from spring pressure. If it's stuck, you'll have to pry it out. At that point you can reassemble everything and it will likely work again for a while. Be sure the negative battery cable is disconnected when you're digging around in there.
