fuel pump

i have a 1988 chevy caprice classic. i have replace the mechanical fuel pump but the car will not continue to run once started. I was starting the car by pouring gas into the carburator, but it would only run for a few seconds. I NEED HELP

Check the line gong back to the tank for being porous, the pick up being clogged or the camshaft lobe worn off.You can test the tank and lines by using a 6 or 8 foot piece of hose attached to the fuel pump and try the run the car off a portable gas can.
