Camaro overheats under hard acceleration

Hi my camaro overheats under hard acceleration 1988 5liter v8, TBI, on flats & urban traffic heat gauge at quater mark. Uphills & hard acceleration even on flats heat gauge goes all the way to top, but comes down fairly quickly when I lean of the pedal.
