1987 Jaguar XJ6 setting timing

I have sat the timing according to the jaguar manual. But it makes no difference. The car still sputters, shakes, backfires at the breather connection, when I put it in gear it won't get any gas. And turns off. If I do get to drive it some it has no compression. I believe the timing setting instructions on the manual do not give enough detail. And I miss a thing or two in executing them. Set the rotor to point at #6 spark plug. Now set the timing mark pointer to align with mark. And that's it. There's got to be more to it than that. Those instructions make no sense.
thank you, arnulfo

WELL SIR,

IT MAKES PRETTY GOOD SENSE TO SOMEONE WHO IS "IN TUNE" TO WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT.........ONCE YOU ARE SHOWN AND GET THE HANG OF IT, IT WILL MAKE PERFECT SENSE!

I'M A JEEP KINDA GUY AND DEAL WITH CARBURETED STUFF MOSTLY

WHAT I'M ABOUT TO SHOW YOU IS SORTA THE WAY STUFF WAS TIMED PRE-90s

YOURS MAY DIFFER A LITTLE AS FAR AS YOU MOST LIKELY DO NOT HAVE VACUUM ADVANCE....YOU WILL PROBABLY HAVE A "WIRE" SOMEWHERE TO DISCONNECT WHILE TIMING WITH A TIMING LIGHT.

ON SOME VEHICLES IT IS THE "SPOUT" OR "SPOUT CONNECTOR". YOU WILL NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT TILL IT'S TIME TO "TIME IT WITH A TIMING LIGHT".......WHEN YOU FINISH TIMING IT, YOU MUST RECONNECT IT......THIS PROCESS SORTA "ZEROS" THE DISTRIBUTOR (FOR THE COMPUTER). ONCE THE WIRE IS RECONNECTED, THE COMPUTER ADVANCES OR RETARDS AS NEEDED

.........JUST LIKE "WE" RECONNECT THE VACUUM LINE WHEN WE GET IT TIMED ON A CARB VEHICLE, THEN VACUUM CONTROLS THE DISTRIBUTOR
.
.
.
I KNOW I'VE PROBABLY CONFUSED YOU

WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO DO .....NOW........IS "SYNCHRONIZE" THE DISTRIBUTOR WITH THE CAM/ VALVES/ TDC

CARB OR FUEL INJECTED......THIS HAS TO BE DONE 1ST, IF THE DISTRIBUTOR HAS BEEN REMOVED AND THE ENGINE WAS TURNED, OR YOU DON'T ZACKLY 'MEMBER OR DID NOT MARK STUFF. ONCE YOU ARE "IN SYNC" WITH THAT.....ALL IS GOOD TO GO!!!..........

...........YOUR TIMING IS STILL OFF, BUT THE ENGINE WILL RUN SORTA "CORRECTLY", AS THE CYCLE IS NOW RIGHT.................THIS IS WHERE THE TIMING LIGHT (AND SPOUT?/ WIRE) COMES INTO PLAY TO KINDA GET THINGS PERFECT!

LOOK AT MY ANSWER IN THIS POST

I WANT YOU TO WATCH THIS STUFF A FEW TIMES, BEFORE YOU JUMP ON IT....EVEN WITH A BUDDY WHO MIGHT FILL IN THE GAPS OF UNDERSTANDING...........I PROMISE, YOU WILL MISS SOMETHING THE 1ST GO 'ROUNDS. IT WILL FINALLY "CLICK IN" YOUR HEAD, AS TO "WHY" THINGS ARE BEING DONE.......THEY EXPLAIN THIS WITH DIFFERENT SCENARIOS........TAKING IT ALL IN WILL HELP YOU FIGGER IT OUT!

REMEMBER, YOU MAY HAVE TO "WORK" YOUR ENGINE INTO WHAT THEY ARE TEACHING.....THIS PROCESS WORKS FOR ANY 4 STROKE ENGINE...4-6-8-10 CYLINDER!

LEMME KNOW IF THIS HELPS
