Engine temp indicator

Is there any reset for a 1987 v8
GMC pickup engine that overheats? after engine is cooled, the temp indicator goes to max and engine will not crank.

There is a way to reset the computer, try disconnecting the battery for a couple of minutes. The computer should let the vehicle to start. On later 1980s models you will have to drive it about 40 miles before it completly resets.
