When I got the car it had been switched over to an electric fuel pump. After about a month it went out and I replaced it. Now it comes on but will not pump any fuel. There is no filter along the line just in the fuel pump itself and in the carb. Sometimes it will pump fuel and work for a day or two and other times it wont start up at all

If the pump was installed correctly it will have a means of turning it off when the engine stops running. That is to prevent a fire hazard if a fuel line gets broken in a crash. Usually on GMs that is done with a tap on the oil pressure sending unit. Low oil level can result in low oil pressure and a failure of the pump to switch on.
