indicators dont work unless the hazard button is pushed

Hi, i have a mk4 escort and the indicators dont work unless the hazard button is pushed and the hazards dont work at all. i was told to replace the turn signal switch (is this the same thing as a flasher unit?)i have replaced this but they still dont work.
