I replaced the ballast resistor, dual pickup coil, cap and rotor, plugs wires, and tested it getting.09 volts on each side. Truck will start fine but will not run if it is out of the ON position. As soon as I let off the key it dies, so what to replace now?

MAYBE YOU HAVE THE WRONG COIL----DOES IT HAVE INTERNAL RESISTANCE, OR DOES IT NEED EXTERNAL RESISTANCE (AS YOU MENTIONED YOU HAVE A BALLAST RESISTOR. THAT IS "EXTERNAL RESISTANCE")

IN OTHER WORDS---IF THE "WRONG" COIL HAS IT'S OWN RESISTOR, YOU ARE NOW RUNNING DOUBLE RESISTANCE

I DO JEEP CJs ('41-'86)---SORTA "MY THING" ON HERE

THIS HAPPENS WHEN THE FELLER AT THE PARTS STORE FAILS TO ASK WHAT YOU NEED OR GIVE YOU A CHOICE---AND JUST HANDS YOU ONE (CELL PHONE ADDICTION SOME HOW IS USUALLY PART OF THIS UNFORTUNATE MIX. IN SOME WAY)

I SEE THIS WITH THE CJs FROM TIME TO TIME

ON A CJ THE "I TERMINAL" KEEPS IT ALIVE WHILE CRANKING----SHOWING THE SAME SYMPTOMS YOU HAVE

SO EITHER YOU HAVE TOO MUCH RESISTANCE (COIL OR BALLAST), OR YOUR IGN SWITCH POWER IS NOT MAKING IT TO THE COIL

THE 1979 JEEP CJ DIAGRAM THAT I SHOW YOU MAY WORK SIMILAR TO YOUR SYSTEM. MAYBE YOU CAN UNDERSTAND MY EXPLANATIONS

I WILL SHOW YOU ANOTHER WAY TO MAKE IT "RUN" WITH THE KEY RELEASED. JUST TO SUPPORT MY DIAGNOSIS, IF YOU LIKE

YOUR TURN

OK

1ST THINGS 1ST----CHECK YOUR FUSES!!!!----A BAD DISTRIBUTOR PICK UP---BROKEN WIRES---A BAD IGNITION MODULE (WHATEVER YOU HAVE) COULD PLAY IN

WHAT SORTA MAKES ME THINK IT'S NOT SOME OF THIS IS.......IT RUNS!

EZ

SORTA 1950s GRAND THEFT AUTO---SORTA BEFORE LOCKING STEERING (I'MMA '63 MODEL)

TWO WAYS TO DO THIS----PICK YOUR POISON

1) THE 1ST WAY (PICs 1 AND 2) THIS BYPASSES EVERYTHING IGNITION----BAD THING IS THE IGNITION STUFF IS STILL CONNECTED

POSITIVE BATTERY TO POSITIVE COIL!!!

SO IF THERE IS A SHORT (AND YOU INTRODUCE UN-PROTECTED POWER) THINGS "COULD GO BAD" WITH WIRING.

YOU CAN SEE I USED A 15 AMP FUSE RIGGED W/ 2 FEMALE SPADE CONNECTORSEVEN DOING THIS, THE PROBLEM ALONG THE WAY, BACK TOWARDS THE IGN SWITCH MAY PREVENT IT FROM BUSTING OFF AND RUNNING

2) THIS IS ANOTHER WAY TO DO IT---ELIMINATES THE WIRE BACK TO THE KEY COMPLETELY----SET UP IS A BIT MORE COMPLICATED----IT'S STILL POSITIVE BATTERY TO POSITIVE COIL

SEE PIC 3

REMEMBER....THIS IS MY JEEP AS A DEMONSTRATOR, WITH A 258 6 CYLINDERCOMPENSATE FOR YOURS!

HERE'S THINGS TO REMEMBER!!!

DO THIS OUTSIDE, AWAY FROM STUFF

HAVE A WRENCH READY AND PRACTICE FAST REMOVAL OF EITHER BATTERY CABLE OR SOME HEAVY SHEARS TO CUT ONE!

A CUT OFF SWITCH, EVEN A CHEAP ONE LIKE THIS, WILL ALWAYS BE YOUR FRIEND!

HAVE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER HANDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

...............YES, I'M TRYING TO SCARE YOU!!!

IT'S UNLIKELY YOU WILL HAVE A PROBLEM.........BUT YOU ARE READY!

THIS AIN'T MINE, BUT I CRIED ANYWAY.....WHEN NO ONE WAS LOOKIN'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gt0_OCHIVnk

I HAVE SEEN THIS SORTA THING HAPPEN.......IT HAPPENS FAST!

ANY THOUGHTS?????

I'M HERE TILL MIDNIGHT EASTERN
