First off, forget the toggle switch idea for this. The fan is a high current draw and unless you know how to wire it through a relay, you could end up starting a fire and likely burn out the switch anyway.

You started throwing parts at it without any idea what the problem was. It may not have even had a problem. It is normal for the fan to run after the car is shut off in certain situations. It also takes a special relay so you may have installed the wrong one. It's also possible that the engine was actually overheating for another reason and the fan running after the engine is shut off was the indication of that. You really need someone trained in this to determine just what is going on with the car before you create more issues that you don't already have.
