I have a 1987 chevy s-10 pick up when I down shift to a stop it wants to shut off any suggestions

Doing this obviously is forcing engine to run under starvation conditions. And it is not able to recover in time to keep running? Maybe you should cease downshift actions sooner than just before coming to stop? Or possibly the EGR is not closing in time/leaking? Try disconnecting and see what happens?
