Innacurate fuel gauge

1987 chevy celebrity 4 cyl: From Full tank, fuel gauge seems to be accurate to about a Half a tank. Then seems to stay just under a half for the rest of the tank, starts jumping from half to EMPTY several times, just before its out of fuel. Can this be fixed? If so, how and what?

Might be problem with sending unit in tank? In the diagram, the black wire with white tracer and the pink wire are for the sending unit. Take the connector loose, turn key on, what is the gage reading.

Then, use fused jumper wire between the two wires mentioned, key on, what does the gage read?
