1984 Celebrity alternator gets hot, boils water in battery, checked OK in shop off the car. why doesn't it guit charging?

The alternator only has three power feeds into it and the charge light wire.Have you checked to see what the charge voltage is in the car?The problem could be intermintant?See what the voltage is with the car idling at the battery cables.I bet you have a bad alternator because the regulator is built into alternator and its not computer controled.

Also checking the voltage at the battery with the car idling and the head lights on a/c etc.
